Watch Micheal Pawlyn talk about an innovative approach that seeks sustainable solutions in building architecture influenced by nature. An architect based in London, his firm called Exploration gathers their inspiration from living organisms that are capable of adapting to extreme climatic conditions.
The designs are evolved around three criteria; resource efficiency, closed loop system and pushing towards a solar economy. Resources used are meticulously picked and utilized to the best of its abilities. Waste that is generated at any part of the cycle is immediately seen as a resource that should not be discarded. Pushing towards using solar power instead of energy from fossil fuels reduces the carbon footprint of the system. Apart from being environmentally sustainable, the projects also address the economic viability of setting up elaborate systems thus giving them an added advantage.
His work provides a great insight into understanding the concept of urban metabolism in architecture. The Sahara Forest Project is our favorite!
